 2022 Preview

Bessemer City finished the 2021 season with a disappointing 0-10 record. Last year Bessemer City finished seventh in Class 6A region four with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The defense allowed a team record 400 points last season.

The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Bessemer City averaged scoring just 8.1 points a game. The Purple Tigers also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 40.0 points a game.

The Purple Tigers would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 2-18 record. Since 2010, Bessemer City has gone a combined 60-71. Their 45.8% winning percentage ranks 38th in Class 6A over the past twelve seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Bessemer City has managed to compile a record of 155-120. Their 56.0% winning percentage ranks 29th in Class 6A and 126th in the AHSAA.

The Purple Tigers are led by head coach Antonio Nelson who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 0-10 record in his first season at Bessemer City. The Purple Tigers have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Nelson.

A new attitude at Bessemer City may just be what the Purple Tigers need to rebuild the program to its once glory years. Coach Nelson is in hopes of getting back to those days.

The Bessemer City Purple Tigers will play in Class 6A region four during the 2022 season.

The Purple Tigers enter the 2022 season in the middle of a 12 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season.

This season, the Purple Tigers will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region four. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at Bessemer City will be to simply win some games.

The Purple Tigers open the 2022 season on the road against non-region opponent Woodlawn on Thursday, August 18 at Lawson Field. Last year the Woodlawn Colonels finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in seventh place in Class 6A region five. The Colonels closed out the regular season with a loss to Minor by a score of 35-13.

Bessemer City and Woodlawn have met a total of 47 times on the football field. The Purple Tigers have a 28-17-2 record against the Colonels. They last met in 2013 with Bessemer City winning by a score of 50-0.
